We, Turkish people, like to have technology in our life but, not likely to make a business with new business models.<\/p>\n<p>But as of all you an easily see that there is a big potential in Turkey. We all like to buy and have everything we like.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"facts\"><\/a>1. High Level Facts<\/strong><strong> on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Republic of Turkey<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Turkey is an Eurasian country of 74 Million people, about 50% of which below the age of 25.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>It\u2019s a member of G-20 major economies group, with a GDP growth rate larger than 5% since 2002 (USD 10,436 per capita in<strong> <\/strong>2008).<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>It\u2019s also an EU member candidate country, having formal accession negotiations since 2005.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Europe\u2019s most populous city is located in Turkey, and it\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0beautiful mega-city of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Istanbul\">Istanbul<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"penetration\"><\/a>2. Internet Penetration and Engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> \u2022 <\/strong>The Internet audience in Turkey was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comscore.com\/Press_Events\/Press_Releases\/2009\/5\/Turkey_has_Seventh_Largest_Online_Audience_in_Europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the seventh largest in Europe<\/a> with 17.8 million visitors (excluding traffic from public computers and mobile), making it the second largest country in Eastern Europe behind Russia (31.3 million visitors).<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>When all the Internet users are counted in, Turkey\u2019s Internet users add up to almost 27 million, making it the #11 worldwide.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>The Internet penetration rate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/webrazzi\/turkey-internet-sector-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was only about 37%<\/a> in 2007, as compared to the European average of 59%, which makes it very promising for future growth.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>There were 7.5M\u00a0broadband subscribers in 2007, which grew at a CAGR of more than 65% during 2005-2007.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>There were 66 million registered mobile subscribers in 2008, which consitutes a 7.3% increase from 2008.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Turkish Internet population is young. 77% of users are between 16 and 34 years old.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>An avarege active user have spent <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=tr&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http:\/\/www.ipsos.com.tr\/%3Fpid%3D674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7.3 hours per week<\/a> on the Internet during may 2009.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"advertising\"><\/a>3. Total &amp; Internet Ad-Spend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Advertisers spent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atypon-link.com\/OXF\/doi\/abs\/10.5555\/ertr.2009.6.1.183?cookieSet=1&amp;journalCode=ertr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a total of USD 2.5bn<\/a> in 2007 (for all media types), which is expected to grow to an estimated $4bn in 2012 or 2013.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>The share of Internet advertising in total ad-spend has soared to 5,5% in 2008 \u2013 a 33% increase from previous year.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>By 2010, Internet is expected to be third largest advertising area (7%), after TV (49%) and newspaper (31%)<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Also, total Internet ad-spend is expected to hit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/webrazzi\/turkey-internet-sector-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USD 250M by 2010<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Google and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dyh.com.tr\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dogan Group<\/a> capture a significant amount of advertising dollars by owning 4 sites each from top 25 websites. They\u2019re followed by Microsoft, Facebook, and Yahoo in an order.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Interactive Advertising Bureau\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iab-turkiye.org\/\">Turkey chapter<\/a> was founded on 2007, and it\u2019s expected to start full traffic and behavioral monitoring of its member sites during 2009. This is expected to strongly boost advertising confidence and facilitate more precise targeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"ecommerce\"><\/a>4. E-Commerce Industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Turks are behaviorally adjusting to buying online, total e-Commerce spend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/excitingcommerce\/turkey-internet-sector-june-2009-short\">grew 90% on average<\/a> each year during 2006-2008 (in local currency, Turkish Lira).<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Total e-Commerce spend is expected to hit USD 9 BN in 2009.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Number of issued credit cards were 44 M in 2008.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Top 3 e-commerce and marketplace sites, in an order of their total transaction volume are <a href=\"http:\/\/gittigidiyor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gittigidiyor.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sahibinden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sahibinden.com<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/hepsiburada.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hepsiburada.com<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Sina Afra, a senior eBay executive in Europe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/webrazzi\/turkey-internet-sector-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">predicts the near future of the industry<\/a> as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">\u2022\u00a0Strong entrepreneurship is expected\u00a0along with market fragmentation, especially in the long tail.<br \/>\n\u2022 Turkish stand alone companies and brands can survive as independents, but are more likely to be aggressively pursued by larger companies.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Some companies are expected to successfully pursue a multi-global strategy, perhaps using partnerships and acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"socialmedia\"><\/a>5. Social Media Trends<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Turkish people are#4 on active Facebook user country rankings list, after USA, UK, and Canda.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong> <strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Turkish social networking audience <a href=\"http:\/\/csertoglu.typepad.com\/sortipreneur\/2009\/07\/turkish-online-social-network-engagement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is reported to have spent<\/a> 3.7 hours and view 427 pages on social networks in May 2009 on average.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>About 66% of active internet users \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.universalmccann.com\/Assets\/UM%20Wave%203%20Final_20080505110444.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have indicated<\/a> that they created a profile on at least 1 social website , and 40% indicated they have created at least 1 blog.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Also, about 50% of active internet users indicated that they sometimes share their photos online, and 40% share videos.<br \/>\n<strong><strong>\u2022 <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight:normal;\">M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:normal;\">ost popular social networks in Turkey (<span style=\"font-weight:normal;\">in approximate order)<\/span>: Facebook, <a href=\"http:\/\/eksenim.mynet.com\/\">Mynet<\/a> (eksenim), <a href=\"http:\/\/tr.netlog.com\/\">Netlog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/yonja.com\/\">Yonja<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tr.sevenload.com\/\">Sevenload<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/zurna.com\/\">Zurna<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogcu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blogcu<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blogger<\/a> are the most popular blogging platforms.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Forum-like community\u00a0environments, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:normal;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sourtimes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eksisozluk<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:normal;\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/travian.com.tr\/\">FRMTR<\/a>, and online worlds, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/travian.com.tr\/\">Travian<\/a> are extremely popular. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"context\"><\/a>6. Business &amp; Entrepreneurial Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong> \u2022 <span style=\"font-weight:normal;\">Political and economic environment in Turkey is relatively stable since early 2000\u2019s, due to single-party ruled government, \u00a0ongoing EU accession negotiations, and successful structural reforms.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Lately\u00a0inflation rate is low, and currency exchange rates are relatively stable. All these positive indicators\u00a0made\u00a0Turkey the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.invest.gov.tr\/InvestorsGuide.aspx?ID=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15th most attractive destination<\/a> for foreign direct investment (FDI) in the world in 2008.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong> Government provides <a href=\"http:\/\/www.invest.gov.tr\/InvestorsGuide.aspx?ID=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strong incentives<\/a> for Technology companies and those who engage in R&amp;D activities. Also,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.avrupa.info.tr\/AB_Mali_Destegi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EU provides significant funding<\/a> for technology projects that present socio-economic development prospects.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>Venture Capital scene in Turkey is fairly young, and quite unestablished.\u00a0Prominent VC funds are <a href=\"http:\/\/leventure.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leventure<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lab-x.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LabX<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilab.com.tr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ilab<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldenhornventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Golden Horn Ventures<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong> \u2022 <\/strong>\u201cAngel\u201d investors are very scarce in Turkish Internet Industry. Thus, events such as <a href=\"http:\/\/etohum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">e-Tohum<\/a> (e-Seed), constitute the only chance to provide young Turkish entrepreneurs with seed investment and mentorship.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"top\"><\/a>7. Grou.ps is basically a <a href=\"http:\/\/ning.com\/\">Ning<\/a> competitor.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Chicago based waves.tv (now defunct) attracted angel investment and lots of buzz \u00a0(such as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-17939_109-9882509-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNET<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/363311\/effortlessly-document-your-party-with-simple-photo-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lifehacker<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.killerstartups.com\/Video-Music-Photo\/waves-tv-the-web-cam-based-entertainment-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Killerstartups<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigumigu.com\/iphone\/haber.asp?hid=2766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bigumigu<\/a>) with their photobooth and live reality shows.\u00a0When webcam penetration rates stalled, so did VC\u2019s, making waves.tv a history. Onur Kabadayi was one of the founders (that\u2019s me).<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Turkish\u00a0start-ups that recently started getting more traction and buzz include <a href=\"http:\/\/knowband.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knowband<\/a> \u2013 an e-learning social network, <a href=\"http:\/\/mekanist.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mekanist<\/a> \u2013 an Istanbul city guide, <a href=\"http:\/\/yogurt.com.tr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yogurt<\/a> \u2013 an upcoming virual world, <a href=\"http:\/\/messengerfx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">messengerFX<\/a> \u2013 an integrated web messenger.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><a name=\"resources\"><\/a>9.
